DWD warning: Heavy rain and hail expected in Bavaria

Sunday will continue to be uncomfortable in several parts of Bavaria. Showers and thunderstorms with heavy rain and hail are forming.

The German Weather Service issued a severe weather warning for the western Alps Thursday evening. Here’s what to expect at the conclusion of the week.

The majority of Bavaria had plenty of sunshine on Sunday morning. However, additional clouds will move in from Baden-Württemberg and the Alps in the afternoon, bringing showers and locally strong thunderstorms, particularly in western Bavaria and the Alps, with heavy rain, hail, and gusty winds.

According to the German Weather Service (DWD), the focus in Swabia is on the Danube River region. Starting this evening and overnight, severe weather conditions are expected to spread eastward, with hail of up to two centimetres and gusts of up to 80 kilometres per hour in some places.

In heavy rain, 20 to 35 litres per square meter are possible in some areas over several hours; in very localized areas, heavy rain could bring rainfall of up to 60 litres. The administrative districts of Middle Franconia, Lower Bavaria, Upper Bavaria, Upper Franconia, and Upper Palatinate are also affected.

The German Weather Service (DWD) also issued an official severe weather warning this evening. The western edge of the Alps is affected. There is a risk of falling trees and rapid flooding of streets, underpasses, and basements, as well as landslides. The public is advised to avoid being outdoors.

“The weather should largely move east by the afternoon,” says the DWD. However, the nasty weather will not end soon: it will continue to rain, and temperatures will fall. “It will be a changeable week,” the meteorologist stated.

The DWD predicts alternating sunshine and clouds on Tuesday, with showers in certain places. Wednesday will begin bright and dry, with the risk of showers and thunderstorms rising during the day.
