An Apostolic Call for Unity: Key Themes from the October 2025 LDS General Conference

The 195th Semiannual General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints concluded on Sunday, October 5, 2025, in a unique and profoundly spiritual setting.

Following the passing of President Russell M. Nelson, the conference was presided over by the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, with President Dallin H. Oaks opening the sessions and confirming that the conference would proceed with the spiritual focus planned by the late prophet.

The overarching themes centred on unity through peacemaking, the critical importance of testimony, and a renewed emphasis on making the gospel simple, Christ-centered, and welcoming to all.

The Centrality of the Lord’s House in a Time of Transition

While no new temples were announced in this session, the sacred importance of temples—and the covenants made within them—was constantly underscored. Leaders, including Elder Jeremy R. Jaggi, taught that the altar in the temple is a symbolic resting place where the Savior’s promised rest can be found, urging members to approach all covenants with humility and sincerity.

The doctrine of the temple was presented as a source of strength, mercy, and sanctification, binding members to Christ and providing an anchor in an uncertain world.

Peacemaking: The Practical Application of Discipleship

In a world increasingly polarized, the call to be a peacemaker—a message frequently taught by President Nelson—was amplified.

  • Elder Gary E. Stevenson delivered a powerful message detailing a “Peacemaker Plan,” urging members to create “contention-free zones” in their homes, build bridges online through thoughtful communication, and actively seek reconciliation in strained relationships. He stressed that peacemaking is not weakness, but a powerful act of courage.
  • Elder Quentin L. Cook reminded the global Church of their “sacred duty to accept and welcome new and returning members,” emphasizing that as the Lord hastens His work, members must foster unity and love within their communities and congregations.

The Power of Pure and Simple Doctrine

Several speakers focused on the need for members to simplify their approach to the gospel, turning away from complexity and focusing on core truths.

  • Elder Michael Cziesla highlighted the power that comes from living pure and simple doctrine, emphasizing that a focused, Christ-centered life provides joy, answers to complex questions, and strength to face challenges.
  • Elder Chad H. Webb taught about the Holy Ghost as a “perfect tutor,” urging members to center all gospel learning—both in the home and at church—in true doctrine and in Jesus Christ.

All Are Welcome: The Call to Belong

In a session that felt deeply personal and globally inclusive, leaders pleaded with members to ensure that every individual feels welcome and accepted in the Church.

  • Elder Gerrit W. Gong delivered a moving invitation for all to feel a sense of belonging in the restored Church. Referencing the Lord’s parables, he invited members to treat one another as they would treat the Savior, stating: “We are all better when no one sits alone. Let us not simply accommodate or tolerate. Let us genuinely welcome, acknowledge, minister to, and love.”

The October 2025 General Conference set a tone of dedicated forward movement and personal commitment during a period of apostolic transition, with the consistent theme that the path to peace and joy is found only by drawing nearer to Jesus Christ.
