A routine flight from Darwin to Cairns turned into a terrifying ordeal for passengers on a Qantas-operated flight this morning after a sudden and dramatic mid-air incident.
Qantas flight QF1889, operated by Alliance Aviation, was forced to make a priority landing back at Darwin Airport after a pressurization warning appeared in the cockpit.
The incident caused the plane to plunge 20,000 feet in a rapid and terrifying descent, leaving passengers screaming and shaken.
The flight, which took off around 6:15 a.m., was about 30 minutes into its journey when the warning light went off.3
Following standard operating procedures, the pilots initiated an emergency descent, bringing the aircraft down from its cruising altitude of 30,000 feet to 10,000 feet.
A “Terrifying” Experience for Passengers
For those on board, the experience was anything but standard. Passengers described scenes of chaos and fear as the plane dropped suddenly without warning. “The little girl next to me started screaming in pain from her ears hurting from the rapid descent,” one passenger told a local outlet.
Another passenger, visibly shaken, said, “I think it is the closest all of us passengers ever want to come to a plane crash.”
The sudden drop was accompanied by screams from the cabin, as passengers were given no prior notification of the descent. Upon landing safely at Darwin Airport, the plane was met by emergency services, including paramedics, to attend to any passengers who may have been injured or suffered from the distress of the incident.
Qantas Apologizes as Investigation Begins
A Qantas spokesperson confirmed the incident, stating that the pilots had followed standard operating procedures in response to the pressurization warning.
The airline acknowledged that the experience would have been “unsettling” for customers and apologized for the inconvenience.
The aircraft, which was a Boeing 737, has been taken out of service for a full inspection to determine the exact cause of the pressurization issue. While such events are rare, they highlight the rigorous safety protocols pilots follow to ensure the well-being of passengers, even in the most stressful of circumstances.
