In a significant career move following his recent departure from federal politics, former Australian Greens leader Adam Bandt has been named the new chief executive officer (CEO) of the Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF).

The appointment, announced by the ACF’s board, marks a new chapter for the prominent environmental advocate.

Bandt will officially begin his role in January 2026, succeeding long-time CEO Kelly O’Shanassy.

According to ACF Board Chair Ros Harvey, Bandt was the unanimous choice for the position after a rigorous search that screened more than 300 candidates.5

Harvey stated that “hard times require bold leadership,” and that Bandt’s “vision, the bravery and the experience” are what the organization needs to address the challenges of climate change and nature destruction.6

After losing his seat in the recent federal election, Bandt will now formally abandon further electoral pursuits with the Greens to take on this new position.7

In a statement, he called the appointment a “true privilege” to help lead “Australia’s most respected voice for nature and climate at such a critical time.”

He paid tribute to his predecessor, acknowledging the strong organization she built.

His new role with the ACF, a leading national environmental group, aligns with his longstanding commitment to climate and environmental issues throughout his political career.
