Even though Switzerland is considered one of the safest countries in the world, the US recently issued a travel warning for it.
The U.S. Department of State recently updated its travel advisory. This includes a Level 1 travel warning for Switzerland. The country was recently ranked among the safest countries in the world by Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection. Nevertheless, the U.S. government advises travellers to exercise caution. The updated warning was issued on May 20.
USA warns against Alpine travel to Switzerland: Special caution in tourist areas
However, the classification does not mean that Switzerland is now considered dangerous. A Level 1 travel warning simply recommends taking normal precautions. Yahoo News reports that the U.S. State Department made the recommendation as part of routine practice. Even for very safe travel destinations, the U.S. State Department regularly issues advisories to inform citizens about potential risks. Level 1 is the lowest risk category in a four-tiered system.
US recommendations for travel to Switzerland:
-Sign up for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive messages and alerts from the U.S. Embassy.
-Prepare for emergency situations.
-To find out about the latest health information for travelers in connection with your trip and return
-Take out travel insurance
On the official website Travel.State.Gov, the US government provides general advice for travel to Switzerland. Specific reasons for the warning were not given. However, the Bureau of Consular Affairs points to possible protests and a medium risk for crime. Caution is advised, especially in tourist areas. Specifically, it states: “Visitors to crowded and popular tourist areas (e.g., museums, monuments, train stations, airports, and subways) should be especially alert to their surroundings.” It also warns of alpine hazards such as avalanches, especially for winter sports tourists.
US travel warning for Germany: “Exercise increased caution”
Germany is currently even under a Level 2 US travel warning: “Exercise increased caution.” The State Department cites the threat of terrorism as the primary reason. The statement states that terrorist groups and lone perpetrators continue to pose a danger, and that attacks could potentially be carried out in public places with little or no warning. Travelers are therefore urged to exercise increased vigilance.
