Bärbel Bas, the recently appointed Labour Minister, is preparing to increase pension money. She suggested that federal officials make contributions to the pension fund as well. A scheme with serious repercussions.
Civil officials should be covered by the statutory pension insurance scheme, according to SPD Labour Minister Bärbel Bas. Members of parliament, independent contractors, and civil personnel should all make contributions to the pension insurance program. “We must increase revenue,” Bas told the publications of the Funke Media Group.
The Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the coalition government decided to form a pension panel, which will now be constituted as soon as possible and will consider the specifics. The new Labour Minister stated that it will be responsible for proposing reforms.
According to the terms of the coalition agreement between the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), the current 48% pension level will remain legally set until 2031.
But the system is under strain because of the ageing of society. While more and more people will get retirement benefits in the upcoming years, fewer and fewer workers will make contributions to the pension system.
The coalition accord is still unclear on how pensions will be funded in the long run. “Only a growth-oriented economic policy, a high employment rate, and appropriate wage development will make it possible to finance this on a long-term basis,” it says.
Bas also stated in the interview that she would be willing to run for the SPD party chairperson. When asked if she would respond to a question regarding her interest in the role from the party head, Bas said, “He hasn’t yet.”
