Downtown Bakersfield was placed under lockdown Tuesday after a man barricaded himself inside a Chase Bank with a reported bomb threat. City Hall and other municipal buildings were affected as police and federal agents responded to the scene.
The heart of downtown Bakersfield was brought to a standstill on Tuesday, June 2, as a high-stakes security incident forced a widespread lockdown of municipal buildings and triggered a massive emergency response.
The crisis began shortly after 1:00 p.m. when authorities received reports of a bomb threat at a Chase Bank building located on Chester Avenue and 17th Street. Upon arrival, Bakersfield Police Department officers discovered that an unidentified male suspect had barricaded himself inside the facility with an unknown number of community members.
A City Under Lockdown
As the situation unfolded, the Bakersfield Police Department issued urgent instructions for the public to avoid the downtown area. To ensure the safety of staff and residents, several key city buildings were immediately placed on lockdown, including:
- City Hall North
- City Hall South
- The Development Services Building
- Bakersfield Police Headquarters
While a number of people were able to escape the bank in the initial stages of the incident, authorities remained focused on the safety of those still inside. By late afternoon, a significant police presence had established a perimeter around the block, featuring a tactical vehicle, multiple emergency response units, and federal agents.
Negotiations and Response
The Bakersfield Police Department’s crisis negotiation team reportedly established contact with the suspect via telephone as the standoff continued throughout the afternoon. Reports from local media, including Bakersfield Now, it was suggested the suspect may have had an explosive device strapped to his body, though official sources remained cautious with their terminology regarding the exact nature of the threat.
A spokesperson for JPMorgan Chase, Peter Kelley, confirmed the bank is working closely with law enforcement, stating that their primary focus remains the safety of everyone involved in the incident.
“We are on scene… for a confirmed bomb threat,” the police department stated on X, emphasizing that road closures in the vicinity will remain in effect until further notice. No injuries have been reported at this time, and the investigation remains active as authorities work toward a peaceful resolution.
