Prominent Mexican businessman, former senator, and industrial leader Omar Raymundo Gómez Flores has passed away at the age of 74.
Omar Raymundo Gómez Flores, one of Jalisco’s most influential business figures, industrial magnates, and a former federal legislator, has died at the age of 74.
His passing was confirmed on Wednesday by state officials and business associations, drawing widespread tributes from political leaders, economic circles, and civic organizations across Mexico.
A Half-Century Industrial Legacy
Born in Guadalajara in 1952, Gómez Flores built an expansive commercial empire that spanned over five decades. Beginning his career from humble roots, he took over and expanded family enterprises following his father’s passing in the late 1960s, turning early ventures in transport and services into major corporate entities.
In 1981, he founded the prominent real estate development conglomerate Grupo Inmobiliario G (GIG), serving for years as the president of the Promotora Empresarial de Occidente (PEO). Over the decades, his entrepreneurial footprint expanded into core sectors of the Mexican economy, including manufacturing, agriculture, and logistics.
He played a foundational or leadership role in several iconic national companies, including:
- MINSA,a major producer of nixtamalized corn flour
- DINA (Diesel Nacional), the historic bus and truck manufacturing firm
- ALMER, specializing in agricultural storage and logistics
- Major transportation and logistics groups such as Estrella Blanca
Transition Into Public Service and Politics
In addition to his towering presence in the corporate sector, Gómez Flores maintained an active footprint in national politics as a member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI).
He represented the state of Jalisco as a federal Senator during the LVIII and LIX Legislatures of the Mexican Congress from 2000 to 2006. During his tenure in public service, he focused heavily on legislative initiatives tied to sustainable development, urban housing expansion, and the protection of natural resources, including championing ecological restoration initiatives for regional watersheds.
He is survived by his family, including his prominent daughter, business leader Altagracia Gómez Sierra.

Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus led the tributes, remembering Gómez Flores as a bold, pioneering entrepreneur and a dedicated friend to the region.
“Don Raymundo Gómez Flores was a great businessman. Visionary, brave, and deeply driven—a natural entrepreneur in both business and politics,” Governor Lemus stated. “We are going to miss him dearly. May he rest in peace.”
