Apple’s first foldable model, the iPhone Duo, will put consumers’ willingness to pay high smartphone costs to the test.

Apple Inc.’s new iPhone Duo, a game-changing invention for the firm, costs $3,199 in its top-of-the-line configuration, establishing a record for the cost of a mass-market smartphone.

The gadget costs $1,999 for the model with 256 gigabytes of storage, but the version with 2 terabytes costs an additional $1,200.

Apple also sells 512-gigabyte versions for $2,199 and one-terabyte configurations for $2,599.

Apple’s first foldable model, the Duo, will put consumers’ willingness to pay a premium for a smartphone to the test.

The $3,199 equipment is almost the same price as Apple’s MacBook Pro computers and is getting close to the $3,699 pricing of the Vision Pro headset, which failed in part owing to its exorbitant cost.

Why is this Apple’s most expensive iPhone?

The complexity of the phone’s engineering and the expense of its components propelled its price to unprecedented heights. The tablet includes two sophisticated screens, and Apple had to miniaturise several components in novel ways.

Meanwhile, a major scarcity of memory chips has raised prices throughout the whole consumer electronics sector.

In that regard, Apple wished to keep the beginning price below the psychological barrier of $2,000. However, higher-capacity designs will assist to boost company profits.

What other foldable smartphones are there?

The competition isn’t far behind. The iPhone Duo’s base price is just $100 higher than Alphabet Inc.’s Google’s Pixel 11 Pro Fold, Samsung Electronics Co.’s Galaxy Z Fold8, and HUAWEI Mate XT.

The most expensive configuration of Samsung’s foldable phone, the Fold8 Ultra, reaches $2,699. But that phone offers less storage than the top-of-the-line iPhone Duo: one terabyte.

Apple is trying to soften the blow with a new leasing programme. This allows customers to get the basic iPhone Duo for $57.99 a month, while the 2-terabyte version is priced at $92.81.

The company is also charging higher prices to some consumers abroad.

The Duo, for example, starts at 2,999 Canadian dollars (2,172 US dollars) and 3,499 Australian dollars (2,525 US dollars).

For the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, Apple slightly raised prices, with an increase of $100 for each model in the United States.

Apple also increased the price of the iPhone 16, 17e, 17, and Air models by $100 without updating those devices. The company discontinued last year’s iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max. Apple did not raise prices on AirPods or the Apple Watch.
