Thommy Schmelz from “Goodbye Deutschland” is back in the hospital. His wife Kathrin alerts followers about his terrible medical condition.
“Unfortunately, my darling has been back in the hospital for a week.” Kathrin Mermi-Schmelz published these remarks in an Instagram update on her emotional wellbeing on Monday (July 27). Again, significant volumes of fluid had gathered in her husband’s body. Thommy is having trouble breathing, and according to his wife, his kidneys are no longer working correctly.
Doctors just removed 17 litres of fluid from Thommy’s body, but it has returned. For Kathrin, this is the start of another time of worry and uncertainty. In her Instagram video, the 57-year-old describes how the pair had an appointment with Thommy’s internist, who specialises in stomach medicine. However, it rapidly became apparent how bad the situation was once more. The physicians opted to readmit the “Goodbye Germany” star to the hospital.
The water is pressing against Thommy’s lungs, making it difficult for him to breathe. Kathrin eloquently depicts the current scenario: “The water situation is quite critical. “He can barely breathe.”
The hospital team is now responsible for more than just removing extra fluid from his body. The physicians will presumably also try to boost his renal function. “Then they also have to get him to urinate properly so that his kidneys can work better again,” adds Kathrin.
At that point, it was unclear what particular therapy the physicians planned. “I have to wait until he’s admitted to the ward and then wait for the doctor’s appointment,” Kathrin added. Only then would she know what was next for her spouse.
As difficult as the renewed hospital stay is for her, it at least gives Kathrin a little peace of mind. “As awful as it is, he’s in very good hands here,” she says about Thommy’s hospitalisation. At home, on the other hand, she’s constantly worried that something might happen while she’s working.
Kathrin has to leave her husband alone repeatedly to secure the couple’s livelihood. She has been solely responsible for their finances since the end of 2023 and now works six days a week in a restaurant in Mallorca. Thommy can no longer work as a cook due to his health condition.
“When he’s at home, I get scared again when I’m at work that something might happen,” Kathrin admits. At the hospital, she knows Thommy is receiving round-the-clock medical care.
Thommy has had major health difficulties for a long time. In March 2025, physicians removed a portion of his lung. A few months later, an aggressive fungal infection ravaged the remaining lung tissue. His health deteriorated significantly. Thommy was admitted to the critical care unit, where he required mechanical ventilation and spent some time in a medically induced coma. After waking up, his body was so weak that he had to relearn basic movements and duties.
He returned to the hospital several times. His blood test results concerned the physicians; at one point, they suspected a gastrointestinal haemorrhage. Thommy need blood and iron transfusions. He also lost a lot of muscular mass as a result of his prolonged hospitalisation.
Despite these losses, Thommy and Kathrin have never lost their courage. The pair now confronts another tremendous issue. It is uncertain when Thommy will be able to leave the clinic and how the physicians intend to treat his fluid retention permanently.
Kathrin ends her video by asking for her viewers’ support. “Keep your fingers crossed for my sweetheart,” she says.
