The entertainment world is mourning the loss of veteran Hong Kong actor Benz Hui Shiu-hung, who passed away at the age of 76 in the early hours of Tuesday.

His family confirmed that the beloved performer died at a Hong Kong hospital due to multiple organ failure caused by cancer.

Hui, often affectionately dubbed the “King of Supporting Actors”, had a prolific career spanning over five decades, becoming one of the most recognizable faces in the Hong Kong film and television industry.

A Career Defined by Character

Known for his versatile portrayals, Hui was equally convincing as the lovable sidekick, the world-weary police superintendent, or the cunning triad boss.

  • Iconic Roles: His memorable characters include the bumbling yet astute Superintendent “Chung Sir” in the Love Undercover movie series and the complex triad boss Chum Foon-hei in the critically acclaimed TVB drama Line Walker (2014), a role that earned him a major popularity award.
  • TVB Legacy: His career coincided with the golden age of Hong Kong television, with his appearances in numerous classic TVB series ensuring he was a familiar face to millions across East and Southeast Asia.

Prior to his passing, Hui had been hospitalized and in critical condition, prompting a rush of visits from concerned friends and colleagues, including stars like Chow Yun Fat, Michael Miu, and his goddaughter, actress Charmaine Sheh.

Life in Singapore and Final Days

While maintaining his Hong Kong roots, Hui had reduced his workload in recent years and enjoyed a semi-retired life in Singapore with his family, where his wife, Angeli Lung, is a permanent resident.

He remained active on social media, frequently sharing posts and videos, including an online series with his daughter, Charmaine Hui, titled “My Father is Seeking Joy”, which documented their family life and shared moments, such as playing video games.

His last public appearance was reportedly during the Mid-Autumn Festival on October 6.

His family expressed deep gratitude for the outpouring of support and asked for privacy, stating that funeral arrangements would be announced later.

Tributes poured in from his peers, with actress Miriam Yeung Chin-wah writing, “I’m thankful that I was lucky to meet you at the starting point of my career,” marking the end of a remarkable era in Asian entertainment.
