Netflix’s “Nobody Saw Us Leave (Nadie nos vio partir)” tells the haunting true story of Tamara Trottner, who was kidnapped by her own father in 1968. Based on Trottner’s memoir, the five-episode Mexican thriller explores love, revenge, and a mother’s desperate search across continents. Now a global hit, the series is Netflix’s most-watched show in Brazil and one of its top titles worldwide.

The thriller-drama series Nobody Saw Us Leave (Nadie nos vio partir), which premiered on Netflix, rapidly captivated viewers with its compelling and dramatic story of the kidnapping of two children by their own father.

On Saturday (18), it became the streaming service’s most-watched production in Brazil. The Mexican narrative is based on a true and terrible experience told in author Tamara Trottner’s biography Nobody Saw Us Leave.

The real-life incident that inspired the story occurred in 1968. Tamara Trottner, the author, is one of the children who was a victim of this parental abduction.

The writer recounts that, on her fifth birthday, she and her brother were abruptly taken from home by their father, without any warning to their mother, marking the end of her childhood. Trottner’s book narrates the experience from her child’s perspective.

The kidnapping was motivated by revenge. After the father discovered the mother’s alleged affair, he took the children in retaliation, keeping them away from their mother for years.

During this time, the father moved to several countries in an attempt to hide the children’s whereabouts.

However, the mother refused to give up, employing every means possible, including hiring private investigators, to locate them.

Tamara has shared in interviews that her mother prefers to refer to the incident as a “trip” rather than a kidnapping. Initially, she and her brother (Isaac) thought they were on vacation, but the lack of answers about their mother, home, and school made them realise something was wrong.

In the Netflix series “Nobody Saw Us Go,” the story’s perspective shifts, focusing on a mother’s struggle to reunite with her children. Set in 1968 in a wealthy Jewish-Mexican community, the five-episode series introduces Valeria Goldberg (Tessa Ia), a young mother trapped in a loveless arranged marriage with Leo Saltzman (Emiliano Zurita), the son of an influential businessman.

Valeria, pressured by family expectations, makes a mistake that serves as a pretext for Leo and his parents to destroy her life and separate her from her children.

The series shows how Leo, on family advice, takes his two children, Tamara (Marion Siro) and Isaac (Alexander Varela), to Europe without informing Valeria.

Desperate, Valeria hires Elías (Ari Brickman), a former Mossad agent turned private detective, to track them down. The search becomes an international chase that takes the characters through several countries, including France, South Africa, and Israel.

Meanwhile, Valeria must contend with her powerful in-laws, who use their influence to ruin her reputation and turn the community against her mother.

The series’ closing credits reveal that Isaac and Tamara only saw their father, Leo, after more than 20 years. In interviews, the writer said the meeting was marked by a mixture of pain, healing, and reflection.

While there was no absolute forgiveness, the process of confronting her father and hearing his version of events allowed the wounds to begin to heal and also helped her reshape her own story, published in book form in 2020.

Her mother, Valeria, and Carlos (Gustavo Bassani) remained together for the rest of their lives, until Carlos’s death in 1997.

“The book and the series are inspired by my life and came about when I realised I needed to tell this story. They’re my memories of when I was five years old and my father kidnapped my brother and me to get revenge on my mother. We spent two years on three continents. I reunited with my father, whom I stopped seeing at seven, and asked him how he dared take us away. He told me his truth, which was as precious and true as my mother’s. I decided to write a novel that would expose the events and let people decide,” said Tamara during an event to present the series.

It’s worth noting: Valeria and Leo are names used in the fiction. The author kept the parents’ real names secret, despite detailing the family dynamics.

Trottner recently published a new book, “I Will Pronounce Your Names”, which serves as a prequel to her memoir. In this new work, the author explores the lives of her grandparents, who were forced to leave Eastern Europe in the first half of the 20th century due to war, persecution, and violence.

Tamara explained that she felt the need for readers to understand where her family came from and what her ancestors were like so they could understand why everything that happened unfolded the way it did.

Now over 60 years old, she has an Instagram account, @tamaratrottner. The writer is married, has three children, and is already a grandmother.
