Liverpool striker Diogo Jota has died in a car accident at the age of 28. This was initially reported by various media outlets, including the Spanish newspaper “Marca” and the Spanish news agency “EFE”. Liverpool FC has since confirmed the death.
The Premier League club wrote on its website: “Liverpool Football Club is devastated by the tragic death of Diogo Jota. The club has been informed that the 28-year-old died alongside his brother André following a road traffic accident in Spain.”
The Reds continued: “Liverpool FC will not be making any further comment at this time and ask that the privacy of Diogo and Andrés’ family, friends, teammates and club staff be respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.” The Portuguese Football Federation also issued a statement. He wrote on the X platform: “The Portuguese Football Federation and all of Portuguese football are deeply shocked by the death of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva this morning in Spain.”
He was not only a fantastic player, “but also an extraordinary person, respected by all his teammates and opponents, who radiated contagious joy and was a point of reference in his community.” Jota played 49 matches for the Portuguese national team.
According to the EFE news agency, the accident occurred around 12:30 a.m. on Thursday on the A52 in Cernadilla (Zamora, Spain). According to Marca, citing the Zamora Provincial Council, Jota’s car apparently left the road and caught fire. Police report that a blown tyre may have been the cause. The vehicle involved in the accident is said to be a Lamborghini.
According to “Zamora News“, not only did the car catch fire, but also the surrounding vegetation. A firefighter crew from the Rionegro del Puente fire station extinguished the blaze after receiving the emergency call at 12:40 a.m. Medical personnel who had arrived earlier could only confirm the brothers’ deaths, according to the newspaper.
According to the newspaper “Zamora News”, both men were burnt beyond recognition. Their remains were taken to a forensic institute. Jota’s brother played for FC Penafiel in the Portuguese second division.
Diogo Jota had just married on June 22nd. Wedding photos with his wife can be found on the player’s Instagram profile. Now the family has lost their father and husband, and Liverpool FC has lost one of its key players.
The attacking player has made 182 appearances for the Reds since 2020, scoring 65 goals. With former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp, he won the English Cup and the League Cup twice. With Klopp’s successor, Arne Slot, Diogo Jota won the English Championship last season. He previously played for Wolverhampton, Atlético Madrid, and FC Porto.
