In a quiet village in Chittagong, Bangladesh, a seemingly ordinary family harboured a dark secret that would remain buried for seven years. The disappearance of a husband, the mysterious appearance of a blanket in a pond, and the relentless pursuit of truth by investigators culminated in the revelation of a chilling crime.

The Mysterious Blanket

Seven years ago, villagers in Rāujān, Chittagong noticed a thick blanket floating in a local pond. Curiosity turned to suspicion as neighbours questioned who would discard such an item. Upon retrieval, the blanket concealed a partially decomposed body, unidentifiable and unclaimed, leading to a perplexing investigation.

A Mother’s Silence

In June 2017, Nasima Akter’s son left home and never returned. Despite his disappearance, Nasima chose not to inform her husband, Nazim, who was working abroad. When Nazim returned unexpectedly to surprise his family, he was met with an unwelcoming atmosphere. His wife’s indifference and the absence of their son raised concerns, leading to frequent arguments.

The Fatal Confrontation

On August 18, 2017, a heated altercation escalated when Nazim slapped Nasima. In a fit of rage, she pushed him, causing him to hit his head against a doorframe. The injury proved fatal. In a state of panic, Nasima destroyed Nazim’s passport, the only proof of his presence in Bangladesh, and wrapped his body in a blanket, hiding it in the storeroom.

Concealing the Crime

For a week, Nasima masked the odour of decomposition with excessive use of perfumes and attars. When her daughters questioned the strong scent, she claimed their father had returned abroad. After seven days, she disposed of the body by throwing the blanket-wrapped corpse into the nearby pond.

The Investigation Unfolds

The discovery of the body prompted an investigation, but without identification, the case went cold. Two years later, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) took over. Suspicion fell on Nasima, especially given Nazim’s unexplained absence. Upon interrogation, Nasima confessed to the murder, revealing the details of the crime.

Justice Pursued

The CID’s persistent efforts led to the resolution of a case that had baffled the community for years. Nasima’s confession brought closure to a tragic chapter, highlighting the importance of thorough investigations and the pursuit of justice, no matter how much time has passed.

This harrowing tale from Rāujān serves as a stark reminder of the complexities of human emotions and the lengths to which individuals may go to conceal their actions. It underscores the critical role of investigative agencies in uncovering the truth and delivering justice, reinforcing the adage that the truth, no matter how deeply buried, will eventually surface.
