A 135-meter container ship ran aground in Trondheimfjord, Norway, narrowly missing a coastal home. Residents shocked as NCL Salten crashed just meters away.
The precise circumstances surrounding this occurrence remain ambiguous. It is evident, nonetheless, that Norwegian Johan Helberg experienced a stroke of luck: a 135-meter-long container ship collided with the coast, narrowly avoiding his house by mere meters.
A container ship measuring 135 meters in length has run aground in a Norwegian fjord, coming perilously close to a coastal residence. This morning, the “NCL Salten” made an unexpected landing in Johan Helberg’s garden, situated on the Trondheimfjord near Byneset, with the reasons for this incident remaining shrouded in mystery.
Helberg informed broadcaster NRK that he was still in slumber during the incident and initially failed to notice what had transpired. However, we were roused from our slumber by the neighbor’s loud ringing. He remarked, ‘Did you see the ship?'” the broadcaster reported him as saying. It was utterly ridiculous. As I gazed out of the window, I was met with the imposing sight of a massive ship’s bow. “Had the vessel struck the shore just five meters to the right, Helberg remarked, his residence would likely present a rather different appearance today.”
Local resident Jostein Jörgensen recounted being roused at 5 a.m. by the sound of a vessel colliding “at full speed” with his neighbourneighbor’s property, as he shared it.
Images captured at the site of the incident reveal just how closely the vessel avoided colliding with the residence. The footage reveals the boat crashing into the shoreline, mere meters away from the structure.
“Naturally, such an incident is unacceptable, and it is imperative that we investigate the reasons behind it,” stated Bente Hetland, managing director of the shipping company in question, NCL, in an interview with the NTB news agency. The Norwegian police have initiated an inquiry into the incident.
In the end, the incident concluded without significant repercussions: Helberg reported that the house sustained no damage apart from a heat pump pipe, the crew aboard the ship emerged unscathed, and there were no worries regarding an oil spill. The vessel is set to be towed back to deeper waters shortly—potentially by the next high tide this evening.
