Two people have been reported dead and six others injured in a shooting at Florida State University (FSU); the gunman is in custody. Police identified the suspect as Phoenix Ikner, the 20-year-old son of a Leon County sheriff’s deputy.
A mass shooting at Florida State University (FSU) in Tallahassee, Fla., killed two people and injured at least six others on Thursday, according to officials.
The six victims, one of whom is in serious condition, are receiving treatment at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. The two individuals who died were neither law enforcement officers or university students.
“This is a tragic day for Florida State University,” FSU President Richard McCullough declared. “We are absolutely heartbroken by the violence that occurred on our campus earlier today.”
Police identified the gunman as 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner, whose mother is a Leon County sheriff’s officer who has been with the agency for over 18 years.
Authorities stated a previous military firearm belonging to his mother was found at the site. According to authorities, she was granted permission to acquire her former military firearm for personal use.
According to Leon County Sheriff Walter McNeil, Ikner had been a long-time member of the Sheriff’s Office Youth Advisory Council and was “engaged in a number of training programs.” McNeil said the shooter’s access to guns was not surprising given his “steep” status within the Leon County Sheriff’s Office family.
Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell stated that the shooter “did not comply with commands and was shot” and is currently receiving medical treatment. The gunman also “invoked his right not to speak to us,” Revell said. Police think Ikner was an FSU student who acted alone.
Earlier in the day, Trump said he had been “fully briefed” on the shooting. “It’s a shame, a horrible thing,” he remarked. “It’s horrible that things like this take place.”
According to authorities, the incident occurred just before noon on Thursday, when the shooter shot people near the student union building.
The large campus was put on lockdown for many hours before the school said that law enforcement had “neutralised the threat”.
