European Union (EU) Ambassador to Bangladesh Michael Miller met with Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman.

Michael Miller, the EU Ambassador to Bangladesh, met with Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman. According to the political party, great expectations were stated during the meeting that the EU and Bangladesh’s current cordial bilateral relations will be strengthened in the future.

The meeting was held at the Jamaat-e-Islami central office in the capital, Dhaka, on Sunday. The meeting was attended by the Jamaat Ameer, the party’s Nayeb-e-Ameer and former member of parliament Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher, Assistant Secretary General Ehsanul Mahbub Zubair, Central Executive Council member Matiur Rahman Akand and the Ameer’s Foreign Affairs Advisor Professor Mahmudul Hasan. Jamaat said that the meeting was held in a ‘very sincere and cordial atmosphere’.

Addressing a press conference after the meeting, Jamaat’s Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Md. Taher said that they had recently visited Brussels, the capital of Belgium, along with the party’s Ameer. They had several meetings with high-level officials of the Belgian government there.

In these meetings, positive discussions were held on various issues, including friendly relations between the European Union and Bangladesh, development and progress. Their (Jamaat) position on democracy, women’s rights, minorities and the main export sector of garments in Bangladesh was asked in these meetings. They were able to give them a clear idea on these issues.

Syed Abdullah Md. Taher also said that they have said that they will send their observers in the next elections. He further said, ‘We have sought their cooperation in installing CCTV cameras in every polling station. Along with this, we have also informed them about maintaining the balance of power between the president and the prime minister and not having the same person as the prime minister more than twice.

Regarding the recommendations of the Women’s Affairs Reform Commission, I told them that licensing sex workers is a grave blow to the dignity and rights of women. They agreed with us on these issues. They see the fact that 43% of women participate in Jamaat-e-Islami as positive.’
