The Bangladesh Air Force has integrated and deployed the newly added Ground Master (GM403M) radar with the country’s air defence system.

At the 71st Squadron of the Bangladesh Air Force (BAF), the recently installed French defence firm Thales’ GM 403M Air Defence Radar was officially opened.

The radar was launched on Wednesday by Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmud Khan, the Chief of Air Staff of the Bangladesh Air Force.

The South Asian country purchased the two GM-403M radar systems back in 2020 in order to meet their Forces Goal 2030.

The GM403M is a completely digital active electronically scanned array (AESA) long-range air defence 3D radar that can identify targets at altitudes ranging from extremely high to low.

It follows a wide spectrum of targets, including highly manoeuvrable tactical aircraft flying below a few hundred feet and unorthodox tiny radar cross-section (RCS) devices like UAVs or cruise missiles.

A four-man crew can put up the device in 60 minutes and control it remotely. The system fits into a 20-foot shipping container and weighs less than 10 tonnes.

The device may be quickly deployed while mounted on a 6×6 or 8×8 tactical vehicle and delivered by a single C-130 aircraft or helicopter.

The GM403M radar system has a range of 390 kilometers and can detect any aerial objects at an altitude of 30 kilometers.
