Renowned Italian doctor Professor Giovanni Scambia dies at 65

Following a brief illness, the Full Professor of Gynecology and Obstetrics at the Catholic University, who also served as the Scientific Director of the Agostino Gemelli University Hospital Foundation IRCCS and was recognized as one of the foremost experts in Oncological Gynecology, passed away today at the Policlinico Gemelli.

Professor Giovanni Scambia, a prominent figure in Gynecology and Obstetrics at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart and the Scientific Director of the Agostino Gemelli IRCCS University Hospital Foundation, has passed away today at the age of 65 following a brief illness. He also served as the director of the UOC of Gynecological Oncology at Gemelli Polyclinic.

Exceptional physician, outstanding investigator, remarkable educator. A forward-thinking yet pragmatic physician, cherished by his cancer patients for consistently providing the most effective treatments coupled with profound compassion. He educated numerous gynecologists who have attained significant roles in the field and established a center of unparalleled excellence in gynecology, elevating it to fourth place in the 2025 ranking of the World’s Best Specialized Hospital. Pioneering researcher, prolific author with more than 1100 publications, dedicated and exceptional surgeon.

Originating from Catanzaro on the date of December 24, 1959. Professor Scambia has dedicated his entire career to the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery at the Catholic University and the Agostino Gemelli University Hospital. Completed a degree in Medicine and Surgery at the Catholic University in 1983, achieving top marks and honors, followed by a specialization in Gynecology and Obstetrics at the same institution in 1987.

“As I embarked on my path to becoming a gynecological oncologist, I never imagined I would have the opportunity to inform a woman of childbearing age diagnosed with cancer that she could potentially have a child after recovery, or that advancements in artificial intelligence could assist in creating predictive models for treatment responses.” And yet, here we are today! In a recent docufilm titled “Le radici del domani,” Professor Giovanni Scambia encapsulated his journey as a physician, reflecting on the six-decade legacy of Gynecology and Obstetrics at the Catholic University in Rome. The narrative also highlights the progression of his field, paying homage to his mentor, Professor Salvatore Mancuso.

Giovanni Scambia has been honored with esteemed accolades throughout his professional journey as an academic and physician.

On 2 June 2017, he received the honor of being appointed as a Knight of the Italian Republic.

Since 2019, serving as the President of ESGE (European Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy) and holding the position of Vice President of the I Section of the Consiglio Superiore di Sanità, while also being a Member of the Consiglio Superiore di Sanità, the technical-scientific advisory body of the Minister of Health. That year, he received an appointment to the newly established Consiglio Superiore di Sanità.

In 2021, he assumed the role of president of the University Gynecologists, and in 2022, he became a member of the FIGO Women’s Cancer Commission.

He served on the Steering Committee of the CROME Center (Regenerative Medicine Research Center) and held the position of former President of the SIGO Italian Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics. Additionally, he was a member of the scientific committee at the Health human care and social intercultural assessments (HERA) Research Center, Catholic University.

Additionally, throughout that timeframe, he established the “Catholic Laparoscopy Advances Surgery School,” which has conducted more than 20 refresher courses in laparoscopic surgery, colposcopy, and hysteroscopy.

He held permanent membership in various esteemed international and national scientific societies, including the Italian Society of Gynecologic Oncology, the International Gynecological Cancer Society, the EORTC Gynecologic Cancer Cooperative Group, the European Society of Gynecologic Oncology, the Italian Association of Medical Oncology (AIOM), the Association of Italian University Gynecologists (AGUI), the Society of Gynecological Endoscopy (SEGI), the Multicentre Italian Trials Ovarian Cancer (MITO), and the Italian Society of Oncological Rehabilitation (SIRIO).

The Catholic University and the Gemelli Polyclinic stand united with the family in the profound sorrow of losing an exceptional doctor, an outstanding educator, a renowned scientist, and a thoughtful friend with whom we shared daily reflections.
