‘The Voice’ star Dylan Carter dies at 24 in a South Carolina car accident. The coroner confirms the cause of death as blunt force trauma from a single-car Tesla crash.
The South Carolina music community is reeling from the sudden loss of one of its brightest young stars. Dylan Carter, the soulful country singer who captivated the nation on Season 24 of NBC’s The Voice, passed away Saturday night following a single-car accident in Colleton County. He was 24 years old.
The news was confirmed by local officials and “The Local Voice”, the non-profit organisation Carter co-founded to support women battling cancer. His death comes just as he was preparing for a headline performance at the “Music on Main” event in Moncks Corner, which has since been cancelled in his honour.
The Investigation: High-Speed Impact and Cause of Death
The Colleton County Coroner’s Office released the findings of their preliminary investigation on Monday, clarifying the tragic circumstances of the crash.
According to the report, Carter died from blunt force trauma sustained during the collision. The death has been officially ruled an accident.
Law enforcement officials stated that the incident occurred around 11:42 p.m. on Saturday, April 25. Carter was driving a 2026 Tesla sedan southbound on U.S. Route 21 (Lowcountry Highway) when the vehicle veered off the road for unknown reasons. The car struck a utility pole and a fence before rolling several times.
“Despite wearing his seatbelt and the deployment of advanced safety systems, the sheer force of the impact was unsurvivable,” a spokesperson for the South Carolina Highway Patrol noted. Carter was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he eventually succumbed to his injuries.
A Four-Chair Legacy: From St George to the National Stage
Dylan Carter first rose to national prominence in 2023 with a hauntingly beautiful audition on The Voice. His rendition of Whitney Houston’s “I Look to You”—a tribute to his late mother—famously earned him a rare four-chair turn from judges Reba McEntire, John Legend, Gwen Stefani, and Niall Horan.
Ultimately joining “Team Reba”, Carter became a fan favourite known for his emotional depth and authentic country roots. Reba McEntire shared a touching tribute on social media Monday morning, calling him “a brilliant, kind, and talented young man who brought a huge ray of sunshine to the show”.

More Than a Musician: A Community Pillar
While millions knew him for his voice, those in his hometown of St. George knew him as a tireless advocate for others. Carter co-founded The Local Voice to provide financial and emotional support for women undergoing cancer treatment, a mission inspired by his mother’s own battle with the disease.
“Dylan was the heart of what we do,” the organization shared in a statement. “He believed every voice matters and lived that every day. We find comfort knowing he is finally reunited with his mother in heaven.”
Beyond the stage and the charity, Carter was a multifaceted entrepreneur, managing a local RV park and working as a realtor. Moncks Corner Mayor Thomas Hamilton Jr. reflected on Carter’s impact, stating, “His kindness and charm earned him immense respect, and his absence will be deeply felt. He was much more than an entertainer; he was our friend.”
