The assailants were recognised as members of the Black Bloc, who used Molotov cocktails, sticks, and stones to vandalise establishments and wound SSC-CDMX personnel.
The commemoration of October 2, the day the 1968 Student Movement ended after a violent act of government repression, has been marred in 2025 after dozens of hooded individuals committed attacks and acts of vandalism in Mexico City’s Historic Center.
The first acts of violence occurred at the intersection of Eje Central and Avenida Hidalgo, and continued on 5 de Mayo and Gante streets, as well as in Motolinía.
The attackers have been identified as members of the Black Bloc, who, armed with Molotov cocktails, clubs, stones, and rockets, have injured members of the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC-CDMX) and robbed and vandalized businesses located near the capital’s Zócalo.
Through videos posted on social media, it has been revealed that the hooded individuals, also known as anarchists, entered one of the jewelry stores, a pharmacy, and other convenience stores, which they looted.
Upon reaching the Plaza de la Constitución, the protesters began throwing Molotov cocktails at the SSC-CDMX officers and setting fire to nearby businesses.
Although no preliminary toll has been provided, images show how officers have broken ranks, desperate to avoid being consumed by the flames.
However, the officers have not responded to the attacks in a repressive manner.
