Mexico: Telcel and AT&T users report network outages

People on social media mention having lost internet connection on their cell phones in Mexico.

Thousands of AT&T and Telcel customers lost mobile data while away from home and are now unable to make calls or send texts. Both services are experiencing difficulty as a result of a large outage.

Users of these phone providers thought they had encountered a single technical issue, but when they connected to Wi-Fi and enquired on social media, they realised the problem was widespread.

As of 5:00 p.m., neither provider had issued a formal message to its customers in response to the widespread outages.

According to DownDetector, additional services such as Movistar, UNEFON, and Izzi have had sporadic performance; similarly, certain platforms in the United States, such as Disney+, Hulu, and Chime, have experienced outages.

The central region of the country accounted for the majority of complaints, with users reporting the inability to make or receive calls and messages, as well as a lack of internet connectivity. This is a growing concern.

AT&T had already responded to the reports through its X account, asking users to contact it directly for personalized attention.

In a message posted at 3:38 p.m., the company stated, “We appreciate your contacting AT&T on social media. Please send a direct message so we can assist you with a representative. We’re informing you that there are temporary outages and the necessary measures are being taken to restore communication as soon as possible.”

In addition, the company reported that its executives would contact those affected to provide advice on the detected failures.

For its part, Telcel did not issue an official statement, although it did respond to users through X, acknowledging the problems in the service.

In its messages, the company asked for patience and offered direct assistance, stating, “Good afternoon, ‘Welcome home Telcel’; we sent you a DM to be able to provide you with the attention you request.”

Simultaneous outages across several carriers generated uncertainty among users, who turned to various platforms to express their dissatisfaction and seek solutions. At the time of publication, Telcel and AT&T continued to individually assist those affected, while the specific causes of the outage had not been detailed by the companies involved.
