Kennedy Tower in Loos Destroyed With 800 Kilos Of Explosives

The Kennedy Tower in Loos, southwest of Lille, was dismantled on Sunday, July 20th. The structure, constructed in 1968, requires significant modifications.

95 meters and 28 stories were crushed to dust in only a few seconds. The Kennedy Tower, a residential block in the Oliveaux area of Loos, near Lille, was demolished on Sunday.

The municipality chose the most dramatic form of blasting: roughly 800 kg of explosives were put inside the structure, causing it to fall on itself.

A security cordon was built around the tower to safeguard the nearby residences. Several persons, holding iPhones, observed the demolition of this ancient building in the Lille metropolitan region, which resulted in a massive cloud of smoke about 11:30 a.m.

The Kennedy skyscraper, built in 1968, was the highest skyscraper north of Paris, with 220 flats.

The structure has aged poorly, posing accessibility concerns for persons with limited mobility. It had lifts servicing half-courts; thus, occupants had to climb stairs.

Bringing the building up to code would have been prohibitively expensive for the city and landlord.

The Kennedy Tower, classed as a High-Rise Building (IGH), also incurred enormous financial expenditures due to its administration, regulatory requirements, and the permanent presence of a security force.

These charges had a significant impact on the building’s expenses, making renovations even more expensive.

The disposal of 19,000 tonnes of rubble is estimated to take two months, according to France 3. The rubble will be crushed and converted into road construction materials.

The Kennedy Tower site will be turned into a greenway with over 300 new dwellings erected.
