After the White House confirmed that 25% tariffs on Canadian exports will take effect on Tuesday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced forthcoming counter-tariffs on the United States.
“Tonight, I am announcing that Canada will respond to the US trade action with 25% tariffs on $155 billion worth of American goods,” Trudeau said in a speech to the country Saturday evening.
Trudeau stated that this will involve immediate duties on $30 billion in goods as of Tuesday, followed by further taxes on $125 billion in American items in 21 days to “allow Canadian companies and supply chains to seek to find alternatives.”
This comes after weeks of Trump frequently threatening Mexico and Canada, two of the United States’ biggest trading partners, that he will apply tariffs if they do not stop fentanyl trafficking and the flow of migrants across the border.
Since the original warning, Trudeau has attended many meetings with Canada’s premiers to discuss ways to strengthen their individual border security operations.
