Céline Dion, the French-Canadian singer who announced her retirement in 2020 due to a terrible illness, performed in front of 30,000 people at the Plenitude Arena, a massive stadium on the outskirts of Paris.
During a sold-out performance in the French capital on Saturday, singer Céline Dion was joyfully resurrected on stage following a six-year absence due to an incurable neurological illness.
In two words, I can tell you that I’m doing OK. The French-Canadian celebrity told the 30,000 people assembled at the Plenitude Arena, a massive venue on the outskirts of Paris, “I’ve learned to live with this fragility; having it around so much has tamed it, and I’ve decided to turn it into the strength to live.”
Dion’s 1990s French song “On ne change pas” (“One doesn’t change”) kicked off her first complete concert in six years. During the first song, the 58-year-old diva had to briefly stop singing due to tears in her eyes.
Naturally, they are happy tears. She blew them kisses and said, “I am so happy to see you.”
In late 2022, the singer said that she had been diagnosed with stiff person syndrome, an autoimmune condition that can result in severe cramps, painful spasms, and significant muscular stiffness.
After cancelling concerts due to sickness, the artist’s return to the stage demonstrates remarkable healing.
“The road was rockier than expected,” the musician told her audience in English and French. “But I clung to a faint ray of light in the distance, deep in the mountains,” she said. “Tonight I want to sing for you, sing for myself, and sing for life.”
The vocalist of “My Heart Will Go On”, the theme song from the iconic film Titanic (1997), has called off a tour that had begun in 2019, first due to the Covid-19 outbreak and later due to her poor health.
