An investigation is underway after the body of an 11-year-old schoolgirl was recovered from a river in Gore Glen Woodland Park, Midlothian, following a major search.
A major emergency response and subsequent search operation in Midlothian, Scotland, ended in tragedy on Thursday afternoon after rescue teams recovered the body of an 11-year-old schoolgirl from a river running through a popular woodland park.
Police Scotland confirmed that officers were alerted to reports of concern for the young girl’s welfare in the Gore Glen Woodland Park area, near Gorebridge, at approximately 12:40 p.m. on August 6.
Intense Search and Recovery Operation
Following the initial emergency call, local resources, search and rescue personnel, and emergency medical services converged on the scenic beauty spot, which lies south of Edinburgh and features walking paths winding alongside the Gore Water.
After hours of searching the wooded terrain and watercourses, emergency crews located the child. The body of the 11-year-old was discovered in the Gore Water close to Shank Bridge, which carries the A7 road over the river, at approximately 4:25 p.m. Despite medical intervention attempts, she was pronounced dead at the scene. Her family has been informed and is being supported by specialist officers.
Ongoing Police Enquiries
By Friday, a heavy police presence remained at the location as forensic teams and local officers initiated enquiries. A strict cordon was established, blocking off walking paths passing underneath Shank Bridge with police tape to preserve the integrity of the scene. A single bouquet of flowers was placed by local residents into the roadside railings of the bridge overlooking the water.
Authorities have stated that the girl’s death is currently being treated as unexplained. A comprehensive investigation is underway to establish the full sequence of events leading up to the tragedy.
A spokesperson for Police Scotland released a brief statement: “We were made aware of concern for an 11-year-old girl in the Gore Glen area, near Gorebridge, around 12.40pm on Thursday, August 6. The body of the girl was found in the Gore Water near to Shank Bridge around 4.25pm. She was pronounced dead at the scene and her family are aware. Her death is being treated as unexplained, and inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”
