During the German Triathlon Championships in Steinhude, a major accident happened on the bike course. A French Bundesliga athlete struck his head on the ground and had to be rushed to the hospital right away.
The men’s triathlon on Sunday was in full flow when it occurred. The main field was on the second lap of the cycling segment, which was one of three disciplines in the tournament, along with swimming and running. A major accident happened on the first curve in the town of Steinhude. Spectators on the course and watching on television were stunned.
What happened? In the close group, Frenchman Basile Fouchard’s bike most certainly impacted the rear wheel of the racer in front of him, although accidentally.
He lost control, twisted his upper body, crashed over the handlebars at great speed, and smacked his head hard on the stone pavement without using his hands to brace himself.
His Team Süßen partner and fellow Frenchman, Leo Fernandez, was unable to escape him and crashed with Fouchard. He sprang to his feet, dropped his bike, and dashed to Fouchard, who was laying on the ground.
Fouchard was cognisant and able to move his arms, but his legs were initially immobile. It is unknown if he was unable to do so.
First responders hurried to the scene of the collision. An ambulance arrived soon. The peloton was urged to slow. The racers had to ride by the accident location and observe the medical professionals on the side of the course. Police blocked off the area around the injured cyclist, who was promptly brought to the hospital. I heard a crash behind me. And then, on the following lap, I saw someone on the ground and an ambulance,’ stated eventual winner Lasse Lührs as he crossed the finish line. He addressed Bouchard, saying, “I wish him a speedy recovery. ” And I hope it’s nothing catastrophic and that he can get back on his feet soon.”
No danger to life
There is no specific information on the Frenchman’s condition. “First, I’d want to address the athlete who suffered such a severe fall. According to the information available, he was aware and alert during the incident. During the live show, ARD broadcaster Sebastian Ried stated that there was a significant fall, but no life-threatening risk was involved.
But why did a foreign athlete compete in the German Championships? The explanation is straightforward. The championship was also a regular event in the Triathlon Bundesliga, where the AST Süßen team competed. The town is part of the Göppingen district in Baden-Württemberg.
