Acko Ankarberg Johansson (KD) is leaving her post as Minister of Health just under a week after she announced her candidacy for the next term.
According to sources at SVT, the minister was prodded. In that circumstance, Ebba Busch wants to lead the team ahead of the election campaign, and Acko Ankarberg Johansson is not a suitable fit, according to Mats Knutson, SVT’s domestic political commentator.
On Monday, the party announced in a press statement that she will quit on Tuesday. Acko Ankarberg Johansson posted in a message on social media with the headline “One year to go until the election – opportunity for someone else to take over”:
“I have today notified my party leader, Ebba Busch, and Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson that I am leaving my position as a minister. The Riksdag has also been notified that I am leaving my position as a member of parliament for Jönköping County, thereby also withdrawing my candidacy for the Riksdag’s next term.”
“I’ll come back to what I’m going to do next in due course. Right now it’s time for loved ones,” she writes further.
But the announcement comes less than a week after Ankarberg Johansson announced in a post on social media that she would run for the next term.
According to sources at SVT, the Christian Democrats want to top the team before the election.
– Acko Ankarberg Johansson has been removed from office by Ebba Busch. The Christian Democrats will make the healthcare issue their most important election issue next year, says Mats Knutson.
– In that situation, Ebba Busch wants to top the team ahead of the election campaign and then Acko Ankarberg Johansson is considered not to be a good fit.
The healthcare issue is something that Ankarberg Johansson and Busch have discussed and these discussions have now resulted in her leaving politics, says Knutson.
– The healthcare queues are a continuing problem for the government. A new Minister of Health has one year to show that the trend has been reversed. Acko Ankarberg Johansson is not considered to have the work capacity and qualities required to handle it.
Will get back to you if there is any news.
KD leader Ebba Busch thanks Ankarberg Johansson and writes in a post on social media that she had a commitment “borne by values that are nicely summarised in her own words: people who come together and work for the common good.”
She writes that there will now be a “changing of the guard” in the ministerial post ahead of the election in a year: “We will return to this shortly.”
Acko Ankarberg Johansson has served in the Riksdag since 2018 and has been Minister of Health since 2022. She served as party secretary for the Christian Democratic Party from 2010 until 2018.
