The Álvaro Aguado incident allegedly occurred during Espanyol’s promotion celebrations last summer.
Barcelona’s Investigative Court No. 13 is investigating RCD Espanyol player Álvaro Aguado, 28, for suspected sexual assault. EL PAÍS received confirmation from judicial and investigative sources.
The event allegedly occurred on the night of June 23, 2024, following Espanyol’s 2-0 victory against Real Oviedo to clinch promotion to the First Division. To commemorate the club’s return to the top flight, a handful of club personnel hosted a private celebration at the Opium nightclub on Barcelona’s seashore. According to the complaint, the attack reportedly occurred in this context.
The complainant, an employee of the same club as Aguado, did not file the complaint immediately, but several months after the incident. The investigation was initially handled by the Mossos d’Esquadra (Catalan police) , although in this case the court decided to summon the player directly.
After opening a preliminary investigation, the court granted Aguado the status of suspect. The footballer, who has played for Espanyol since September 2023, has been summoned to testify in mid-May. Both he and the complainant are represented in the case and have legal representation.
A spokesperson for RCD Espanyol has requested respect for the presumption of innocence. Meanwhile, sources close to the player claim that Aguado categorically denies any wrongdoing . The complainant’s entourage, however, has opted not to make any public statements at this time.
