New tire rule threatens high fines in Italy

1 min read

Starting April 15, 2025, tighter tire requirements will apply in Italy, and drivers who drive with improper tires risk receiving fines of up to €1,862.

Italy is strengthening traffic regulations: beginning April 15, 2025, it will be illegal to drive with winter tires with a speed rating lower than the one specified on the vehicle registration certificate.

This approach tries to improve road safety and decrease accidents. Violations bring penalties ranging from €422 to €1,862. In egregious circumstances, car registration may be withdrawn.

A transition period will last until May 15, 2025. During this time, drivers will simply receive warnings for offences, with no instant penalty. However, following this period, the new laws will be aggressively implemented.

Drivers using all-season tires with M+S marks have nothing to worry about, as long as they fulfil the appropriate speed rating and are not overly worn. However, upgrading to summer tires is advised in order to completely comply with Italian rules.

Travellers travelling to Italy by automobile should inspect their tires before leaving and, if required, convert to summer tires. Changing tires in Italy may be costly; the cost is reported to be over €1,000, with wear tests conducted in addition to the tire change.
