Germany warns travelling to Romania over deadly bear attacks

Bears recently attacked and killed hikers in Romania’s Carpathians, and Germany’s Federal Foreign Office is encouraging Easter visitors to exercise extreme caution.

Following fatal bear attacks on hikers, the German Foreign Office has advised holidaymakers to exercise caution when visiting Romania.

To avoid potentially life-threatening incidents, travellers should prepare by adhering to basic standards of conduct.

The most recent alert, published on Saturday, states, “There is a big wild bear population in the Romanian Carpathians.

Bears will penetrate inhabited regions and cities, as well as country highways like the Transfăgărășan Highway, in quest of food. Several violent, sometimes fatal, assaults on pedestrians and hikers have been documented.

The Federal Foreign Office advises vacationers to “observe relevant signs and warnings and follow the instructions of local authorities.” Please see our travel and safety advice for Italy for information on what to do if you come across a bear. Stay away from the animals and don’t feed them.

However, there is no express travel warning for Romania, as several media sites reported on Saturday.
