Erdogan accuses Israel of sabotaging new Syrian government

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accused Israel of attempting to destabilise the revolt that toppled Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

“Israel is attempting to destabilise the December 8 revolution by inciting ethnic and religious tensions and turning Syrian minorities against the government,” Erdogan stated at an Antalya conference on Friday.

Turkey is a crucial supporter of Syria’s new leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, and his Islamist organisation Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, which spearheaded the rebel alliance that deposed Assad in December of last year.

Sharaa personally attended the conference in Antalya and met with Erdogan. Sharaa also visited Turkey in February, where he met with Erdogan in the capital, Ankara.

Israel and Turkey both desire to have influence over Syria, therefore their envoys met earlier this week to attempt to ease tensions there.

While Turkey, according to Syrian sources, seeks to create its own military positions in Syria, Israel has conducted hundreds of airstrikes against Syrian military sites and has seized a small portion of the Golan Heights to keep Syrian soldiers away from the border.
