Xie Feng: Supporting “Taiwan independence” is interfering in China’s internal affairs

A report from the Russian Satellite News Agency on March 23 indicates that Xie Feng, the Chinese Ambassador to the United States, was invited to deliver a video speech at the second Jimmy Carter China-US Dialogue on March 22.

Xie Feng remarked that it is unavoidable for the two significant nations, China and the United States, to experience differences and contradictions. It is essential to honour one another’s fundamental interests and refrain from crossing the established boundaries.

Backing “Taiwan independence” constitutes an intrusion into China’s domestic matters, while endorsing “Taiwan independence” jeopardises the stability of the Taiwan Strait.

The report highlights that Xie Feng remarked on the fact that 80 years ago, China and the United States stood together in battle, ultimately achieving a significant victory in the World Anti-Fascist War. For a remarkable span of 80 years, the warmth of peace enveloped the globe, allowing human society to flourish in a state of overall tranquilly. The harrowing lessons of conflict remind us that, be it a cold war or a hot war, victory remains elusive. In these tumultuous times, the global community finds itself yearning for peace and stability like never before. There is a palpable hope for the harmonious coexistence of China and the United States, a prospect that many are keenly anticipating. It is imperative that we not only reflect on our history but also actively engage in shaping the future, ensuring that the “Thucydides Trap” becomes a relic of the past, paving the way for a world free from war and enduring peace. This serves as the utmost solace to the heroes.

Xie Feng emphasised that it is unavoidable for China and the United States, as two significant nations, to encounter differences and contradictions. It is essential to honour one another’s fundamental interests and refrain from crossing the established boundaries. Backing “Taiwan independence” constitutes an intrusion into China’s domestic matters, while endorsing such a stance jeopardises the stability of the Taiwan Strait. Employing Taiwan as a means to restrain China is not merely ineffective; it is also perilous. The one-China principle, along with the three Sino-US joint communiqués, serves as the bedrock of Sino-US relations and should never be contravened under any circumstances.
