Paris Mayor Candidate Sophia Chikirou to be Tried for Fraud

Sophia Chikirou, a left-wing MP from the La France Insoumise party, is accused of attempting to make a transfer while serving as president of the website Le Média, even though she no longer held that post.

She sees this as an attempt to “harm” her campaign. Sophia Chikirou, the La France Insoumise candidate for Mayor of Paris, is a member of parliament.

The Paris Criminal Court will try her for fraud on May 12, according to a judicial source who spoke with AFP Sunday, January 4. The left-wing lawmaker is accused of “repeatedly attempting to defraud the Crédit du Nord bank” in July 2018, to the disadvantage of Le Média, a news website she co-founded.

According to the court source, her “attempts” involved transferring more than €67,000 to Mediascop, Sophia Chikirou’s communications consultancy business.

In this case, investigators highlighted “an attempted execution”: the defendant is accused of presenting herself as president of the company Le Média, despite the fact that she “no longer held that position,” and of requesting a transfer that ultimately failed due to insufficient funds in her account.

Sophia Chikirou was furious when the trial was announced. “The Paris prosecutor’s office has decided to put me on trial in the middle of the municipal campaign over a matter dating back to 2018 concerning a commercial dispute between two companies ,” she told the Associated Press. “Since then, the two companies have reached an agreement and ceased all legal proceedings ,” she told me.

“So, without a plaintiff and no harm done, the prosecutor’s office is postponing the trial until after the elections! They don’t care about delivering justice; their primary purpose is to harm my campaign,” she said on X.
