A severe magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck 27 kilometres (17 miles) from Dhaka, Dhaka Division, Bangladesh, on Friday, November 21, 2025, at 10.38 a.m. local time (GMT +6), killing 3 in the capital city.
Earthquakes were felt in various parts of the country, including Dhaka. The earthquake occurred at 10:38 am on Friday.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, the magnitude of the earthquake was 5.7. Its epicenter was Madhavadi in Narsingdi.
UPDATE: The Death toll has risen to 6, according to the Associated Press (AP).
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said that the intensity of the earthquake was 5.5 on the Richter scale. The epicenter of the earthquake was Narsingdi.
Earthquakes were reported to be felt in Chandpur, Nilphamari, Sitakunda, Sirajganj, Narayanganj, Patuakhali, Bogra, Barisal, Moulvibazar.
During the earthquake, many people came out of their homes in panic in different areas of Dhaka. The earthquake lasted for a few seconds.
The earthquake was also felt in neighboring India. According to NDTV, the earthquake was felt in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, and surrounding areas.
Rajib Ahmed from Barisal said that he was sitting in a shop on the first floor when the earthquake struck. Everything was shaking there.
Saran Sarkar, a resident of Nagra area of Netrokona city, said that he was sitting down to eat with his family members. The building suddenly shook. He suffered a leg injury while rushing out with his children. Later, he sought treatment from the hospital.
Three people were killed in Purana Dhaka‘s Kasaituli region today (November 21) when a railing from a five-story building crashed onto the roadway.
Mallik Ahsan Uddin Sami, Deputy Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), Lalbagh Division, verified the occurrence.
“The fire department and civil defence rescue team have told us that at least three people were murdered when a railing, bamboo scaffolding, and debris fell on onlookers from a five-story building in Armanitola’s Kosaituli. Another one is in critical condition,” he stated.
“After the earthquake hit, a mobile network tower located on the roof of a building fell on another building. The tower landed on the balconies of the building and caused the fall of the debris on some locals, leading to the casualties,” said Imran Hossain, a local who lives nearby.
He said there was a crowd at that spot because of a meat shop which usually offers discounts on Fridays.
The collapse occurred shortly after a 5.7-magnitude earthquake jolted the country this morning (21 November), according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).
