BMW is recalling more than 300,000 automobiles globally due to starting motor issues. Water may reach the starting motor at particular spots in the car and cause corrosion. This might result in a fire when the automobile is started.
BMW is recalling a large number of vehicles worldwide to address a potentially dangerous problem with the starter motor.
According to the automaker, there is a possibility that a vehicle fire could occur in certain cases.
Approximately 136,500 cars are affected in Germany and nearly 195,000 in the US. While BMW hasn’t provided an exact global figure, given the affected production periods—from September 2015 to September 2021—the actual number worldwide is likely significantly higher.
Vehicles in Asia and other European countries are also affected. A number of combustion engine models, from the compact 1 Series to the SUV X7, built between September 28, 2015, and September 7, 2021, are being recalled.
The starter motor will be replaced, and in some cars, the battery will also be replaced.
According to BMW, water can infiltrate the starting motor in the affected models, causing corrosion. This might cause a short circuit and localised overheating of the component.
Under adverse conditions, there is even a risk of fire. In rare circumstances, starting the engine may not be feasible.
BMW advises taking extra care before repairs: vehicles should only be kept outside and away from structures until the problem is fixed, as there is a risk of fire even while parked.
The corporation did not reveal the cost of the recall.
However, because replacing the starting motor and, in certain circumstances, installing a more powerful battery is required, the overall cost is likely to be significant.
