What happened to Morice Norris today?

2 min read

During a preseason game between the Detroit Lions and the Atlanta Falcons, Detroit safety Morice Norris suffered a serious injury while attempting a tackle. The incident occurred in the fourth quarter with just under 15 minutes remaining.

Norris was attempting to bring down Falcons running back Nathan Carter when he was hit in the head and neck area. The hit caused him to go down and remain on the field for an extended period, with medical staff from both teams rushing to his aid.

The situation on the field was so severe that an ambulance drove directly onto the turf to attend to Norris. He was immobilized on a backboard and carefully loaded into the ambulance before being transported to a local hospital for further evaluation.

The serious nature of the injury was evident to everyone in the stadium, and players from both teams knelt in prayer and support as Norris was tended to and taken away.

Following Norris’s departure, the coaches from both teams, Dan Campbell of the Lions and Raheem Morris of the Falcons, agreed to suspend the game. After resuming play briefly with a ceremonial snap, players from both teams gathered at midfield and allowed the clock to run down.

The league office in New York eventually confirmed the game’s suspension with 6:31 left on the clock, a decision both coaches agreed was the right thing to do out of respect for Norris and the gravity of the situation.

In the hours following the incident, there was a positive update on Norris’s condition. Lions coach Dan Campbell addressed the media, stating that he had received “positive information” from the hospital. He reported that Norris was breathing, talking, and had some movement.

While more tests are still being conducted, this initial update provided a hopeful sign after what was a frightening and emotional moment for everyone involved.
