Netflix announced the termination of its basic plan in a letter to investors included with its fourth-quarter 2023 financial report, claiming that its ad-supported package already accounted for two-fifths of all subscriptions.
As stated early last year, Netflix is continuing to phase out its basic plan in the countries where it operates.
The most recent incidence is in Spain, where subscribers who had this bundle were advised that they will be switched to the normal plan with adverts beginning in September.
Users with this Netflix subscription worldwide which was the first made accessible to the public when it started in 2011, have yet to be advised of changes to their ad-free movie and TV bundles.
Netflix announced the termination of its basic plan in a letter to investors included with its fourth-quarter 2023 financial report, claiming that its ad-supported package already accounted for two-fifths of all subscriptions.
“The ad-supported plan now represents 40 percent of all Netflix subscriptions in our ad-supported markets, and we plan to retire the basic plan in some of our countries, starting with Canada and the UK in the second quarter and continuing thereafter,” reads the document, which is available on the platform’s official website.
It’s worth noting that, since the beginning of the year, Netflix has no longer allowed new customers to acquire the basic plan in our nation.
In Europe, the cheapest membership, which contains adverts, costs 119 pesos per month; the regular subscription, which allows users to watch the app on two devices simultaneously, costs 249 pesos; and the premium subscription costs 329 pesos.
Spanish consumers have complained on social media that the site sent them an email notifying them of the termination of the basic plan and the transition to the ad-free standard plan. Those who want to subscribe to the ad-free plan will need to pay a higher subscription.
Netflix reported $10.5 billion in revenue for the second quarter of the year. According to its financial report, it attracted 8.2 million new members from April to June.
