Ulrich “Ulli” Potofski, 73, a sports presenter, has died. His ex-wife, Monika Potofski, verified this to the news agency dpa. According to “Bild” and RTL, Potofski died on Sunday from a terrible illness.

Potofski began his journalism career on radio and has presented a number of sports shows since the 1980s. He became well known as the face of RTL’s football show “Anpfiff”. He eventually served as a pundit for both DSF and Sky.

“Ulli Potofski had more heart than any other sports writer. He never ignored the human side of athletics. We shall not forget him. “He is missed,” Christina Rann, a presenter and sports analyst who collaborated with Potofski, told SPIEGEL.

Since 2006, Potofski has covered the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal for Sky (previously Premiere). He also provided commentary on matches in the 2. Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal. He pondered retiring in 2023, but instead extended his contract.

His career started off in the 1980s at RTL. He covered football and other sports for RTL from the 1990s till 2006. From 1988 until 1992, he presented the football show “Anpfiff,” which was a parallel to the ARD Sportschau.

He also worked for DSF (now Sport1). He joined Sky in 2006 and has since played an essential role in covering German professional football.

Since 2019, he has presented the daily podcast “Heart, Soul, Ball”. He informed his admirers on Thursday: “I’ve returned to my hospital; hopefully, I’ll be well cared for here. “And Heart, Soul, Ball continues.”

The programmes for the next several days were then recorded by his buddy Christian Sprenger, who had been filling in since mid-May.

Potofski, a self-proclaimed Schalke supporter, was in the hospital for several days in May and revealed this to his listeners on the show, without providing any other information.
