This time, his lead over the competition was diminished, and American Shaine Casas was not far behind (1:54.30).

We nearly forgot about the competition after seeing him dominate all of his races, but this time, his training partner, American Shaine Casas, clung to his coattails. Even in the breaststroke part, the Toulouse native made less of an impact than usual.

Casas clung to Marchand’s ribcage till the final crawl length. The final slide provided the four-time world champion some breathing room, but he needed to remain focused until the conclusion. Casas finished not far behind Marchand’s mark in the Paris Olympics final (1’54″30). Hubert Kos of Hungary completed the podium in Austin, which was fully made up of Bob Bowman’s group.

To judge Marchand’s growth, we must recognise that in Singapore, he outperformed his competition in the backstroke, despite the fact that it had been his weak area for three years. He moved on to seek this designation by examining his flaws and limitations.
