Production is presently in progress for the fifth and concluding season of “Babylon Berlin.” Nevertheless, the production of the acclaimed German series has encountered delays. According to reports from the “Bild” newspaper, lead actress Liv Lisa Fries is currently out “indefinitely.”
Thomas Schreiber, the Managing Director of ARD Degeto Film GmbH, informed the publication: “We can confirm that Liv Lisa Fries is presently not participating in the filming of the fifth season of ‘Babylon Berlin‘.” The ongoing shooting schedule will proceed as planned until the conclusion of April in Hamburg and North Rhine-Westphalia. The next filming session, once more featuring Liv Lisa Fries, is scheduled for autumn 2025.
A production employee has referred to a “insurance claim,” as detailed in the report. Nevertheless, it was not an accident that bore the blame. According to the newspaper, Liv Lisa Fries “is unable to appear in front of the camera at this time due to illness.” The 34-year-old portrays the character of Charlotte Ritter in the series.
Last week saw the commencement of filming for the final season at Hamburg City Hall. The historic plenary hall of the Hamburg Parliament, along with its adjoining rooms, will provide a fitting backdrop for the grand finale of the popular German series. The city asserts that the plenary hall stands as the sole historic seat of a state parliament in Germany. Hamburg City Hall was constructed from 1886 to 1897.
“Babylon Berlin” is a production by X Filme Creative Pool, in collaboration with ARD Degeto Film, SWR, WDR, HR, Radio Bremen, and Beta Film, alongside RBB. The concluding season is reported to draw inspiration from the novel “Märzgefallene” (March Fallen) penned by Volker Kutscher. The narrative unfolds in the year 1933, amidst the rise of the Nazis. The date for the broadcast has yet to be confirmed.
In the principal roles, Liv Lisa Fries and Volker Bruch will once more portray Gereon Rath. Once again, the film will be helmed by Henk Handloegten, Achim von Borries, and Tom Tykwer.
