Stockholm, Sweden— Göran Lambertz, 75, former Chancellor of Justice and Attorney General, is under legal scrutiny once again after being caught with a knife at the Svea Court of Appeal. The incident, which occurred in February this year, has led to criminal charges and a proposed fine of SEK 14,500.
Knife Found at Security Checkpoint
According to reports, Lambertz was attending the Svea Court of Appeal to apply for the role of a legal guardian when security personnel discovered a pocket knife in his backpack. He claims the knife was there by accident and that he had forgotten about it.
“I had no idea it was there,” Lambertz stated.
Legal Proceedings and Proposed Fine
Sarah Jansson, assistant prosecutor at the Västerort Prosecutor’s Office, has filed a lawsuit with the Stockholm District Court. The case, handled under expedited proceedings, may be resolved without a formal hearing. The prosecutor has suggested a fine of SEK 14,500, and Lambertz has admitted to the crime.
“Yes, that’s right. They have to follow their own rules,” he said in response to the lawsuit.
Previous Legal Controversy
Lambertz has previously faced legal troubles. In March 2021, he was detained for two weeks on suspicion of rape during the Christmas holidays in 2020. However, he was later released when the investigation was closed.
Career and Controversial Stance on Thomas Quick Case
Göran Lambertz served as Chancellor of Justice from 2001 to 2009 before being appointed as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court until his retirement in 2017.
His tenure was marked by controversial decisions, particularly regarding the case of Thomas Quick (also known as Sture Bergwall), who was initially convicted of multiple murders but later acquitted. In 2006, Lambertz concluded that there were no grounds for a review of Quick’s case. He has since defended this position, arguing that “extraordinarily convincing evidence” pointed to Bergwall’s guilt despite his later exoneration.
While this latest legal issue involving Lambertz may seem minor compared to past allegations, it has once again put the former top judicial figure in the spotlight. With the lawsuit moving forward, it remains to be seen how the case will be resolved and whether it will impact Lambertz’s public and professional legacy.
