Afghanistani captain Hashmatullah Shahidi says, “Came to be a champion”

Many people, including former star cricketers, have expressed optimistic forecasts regarding their future. The prospects for Afghanistan appear bleak, and that alone speaks volumes. At least, that appears to be the perspective of the nation’s captain Hashmatullah Shahidi. At a press conference held the day before facing South Africa in the Champions Trophy in Karachi, he articulated his aspirations for the tournament, stating, “We came here to be champions.”

Bangladesh captain Nazmul Hossain remarked that every team in the eight-team tournament possesses the potential to emerge as champions. In this regard, Shahidi’s statements hold a pragmatic perspective.

They recall their remarkable achievements in the previous two ICC tournaments. Afghanistan reached the semi-finals in the last T20 World Cup, and in the previous ODI World Cup, they were on track to make the top four until Glenn Maxwell delivered an extraordinary performance.

The Afghan captain, however, views past achievements as irrelevant, stating, “We played poorly in the last two World Cups, but that is in the past now.”We may hold it in our minds, yet we must focus on what lies ahead. Our success is not the sole measure of our identity. We strive for continuous improvement as a cohesive unit. We consistently seize every opportunity to enhance our performance in prestigious tournaments such as the Champions Trophy and the World Cup. Similar to our previous encounter in the semi-finals. This time, we aim to reach the final and secure the title. That is what we are examining; I am confident in our capabilities.

What accounts for the prevailing optimism this time, aside from historical records? Shahidi stated, ‘I have confidence in our team, and these conditions are favorable for us as well.’ As a captain and team leader, I firmly believe we have the potential to elevate our performance to new heights. We are diligently pursuing that goal.

To date, Afghanistan has contested five One Day Internationals against South Africa. They have secured victories in the last two competitions. The Afghan captain expresses optimism as the tournament approaches, stating, ‘We have played a lot of quality cricket in the last two years.’ This presents a valuable opportunity for us, given the considerable experience of the boys. We have a promising opportunity ahead, and it’s essential that we begin on a positive note starting tomorrow. We are optimistic that our tournament will kick off with a victory, allowing us to sustain that momentum as we progress through the competition.
