Incredible performances, moving remarks, and a celebration of musical diversity made the 2023 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony an unforgettable evening. Many famous musicians performed at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, including Sheryl Crow, Olivia Rodrigo, Missy Elliott, and Chaka Khan.
Sheryl Crow and Olivia Rodrigo, both clad in black, opened the show with a stunning performance in which they exchanged lyrics while playing guitars. The audience was instantly drawn in by their enthusiasm and skill. This powerful pair set the scene for an outstanding night that highlighted a strong representation of women and Black musicians in the music business.
Legendary performers concluded the evening by paying tribute to the new members of the hall of fame. When Sheryl Crow sang “Strong Enough,” Stevie Nicks joined in on guitar, while Peter Frampton showed up out of the blue to play guitar on “Everyday Is a Winding Road.” Coming out of retirement for the occasion, Elton John performed with Bernie Taupin, whom John hailed as “one of the finest lyric writers of all time.”
The 2023 inductees to the Hall of Fame included a wide range of musical styles. The legendary Chaka Khan performed a mashup of her best hits with H.E.R., Sia, and Common, which included the funk classics “I Feel For You” and “Ain’t Nobody.” Khan was generous enough to thank guitarist Tony Maiden and the band Rufus for their early support.
Willie Nelson, a legend in the world of country music, was the main attraction of the evening. When Dave Matthews took the stage, he sang an acoustic version of “Funny How Time Slips Away,” and later, he was joined onstage by Chris Stapleton, Sheryl Crow, and Willie Nelson for a stellar rendition of “On the Road Again.” Matthews spoke highly of Nelson, praising his long career and contributions to organizations like Farm Aid.
The late George Michael was recalled and honored by Andrew Ridgeley, his partner in Wham!. Ridgeley praised Michael for his empathy and talent as a singer. A beautiful memorial to the late pop artist Michael was created by the performances of some of his best singles by Miguel, Carrie Underwood, and Adam Levine.
The late guitarist Link Wray was also inducted, along with the likes of “Soul Train” originator Don Cornelius, DJ Kool Herc (the “Father of Hip-Hop”), The Spinners, Rage Against the Machine, and more. These musicians represented a broad spectrum of music genres, from funk and R&B to hip-hop and rock.
When Missy Elliott performed, it was one of the night’s most memorable moments. As the evening’s last act, Elliott brought her own brand of excitement and originality to the stage, delivering fan favorites including “Get Ur Freak On” and “Work It.” The moment, in which Queen Latifah praised her as an artist who “goes hard for the art,” exemplified the event’s promotion of Black and female artists.
The 50th anniversary of hip-hop, a genre that has had a major effect on the music business, was also celebrated during the induction ceremony. When asked about the importance of the event, Missy Elliott said, “To be standing here, it means so much to me.” She remarked on how privileged she felt to share the evening with her fellow honorees.
The induction ceremony for the 2023 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame proved that music can unite people of all backgrounds and cultures. It was a night to remember and honor those who have made permanent contributions to the world of music. As the incredible night in Brooklyn demonstrated, music has the power to break down social boundaries and bring people together from all walks of life.
