Once again, an intriguing development is unfolding at the Otto Wagner area on Baumgartner Höhe. For decades, the Otto Wagner Hospital has been a prominent establishment, renowned for its role as a pulmonary sanatorium, as well as a dedicated facility catering to the needs of the nervous and mentally ill, serving as both a sanatorium and nursing home.

In a momentous decision back in 2012, it was determined that the medical operations would be relocated no later than 2020. This move was deemed necessary as part of the comprehensive Vienna hospital reform, which aimed to integrate these operations into other clinic locations.

The media frequently turned its attention towards the subsequent utilisation and rejuvenation of the site. In a groundbreaking announcement made in March 2018, the Central European University (CEU) revealed its plans to relocate from Budapest to Vienna, with the Otto Wagner Hospital being selected as its new home. In a report published by the district newspaper in June 2022, it was revealed that the CEU had withdrawn from the area. The report highlighted the current state of neglect in the district, characterised by its 34 Art Nouveau buildings, vast park areas, and majestic historic trees. However, it is expected that a change will occur in the near future. According to a recent report from ORF’s “Vienna Today,” there have been developments in the usage plans and visualisations for the vicinity of the Vienna Woods.

In a surprising turn of events, the buildings that once housed the renowned Otto Wagner Hospital are set to undergo a transformation into a university location. This decision comes despite the recent rejection of the Central European University (CEU) as a potential occupant. In an ongoing development, discussions are underway with two universities regarding the final utilisation. According to Susanne Schicker, a representative from the Science, Education, Culture of Wiener Lageentwicklung GmbH (WSE), the term “campus” is fitting for the area under discussion. She highlights that a significant 88 percent of the space is designated as open space, while a mere twelve percent is developed. This stark contrast sets it apart from the current state of Vienna.

In a stunning revelation, it has come to light that the sprawling property, encompassing a staggering one-third of the eighth district, is under the ownership of the city. Wiener Lageentwicklung GmbH, a subsidiary of the company, is presently engaged in the development of a comprehensive usage concept. Exciting Cultural Event Anticipated in Local Community

In a recent statement, Schicker, a prominent figure in Vienna’s cultural scene, expressed his optimism regarding the future of the renowned Art Nouveau theatre. With a rich history of hosting numerous events, the theatre is poised to undergo a revitalization process that will ensure its preservation as a valuable asset owned by the City of Vienna. Schicker confidently asserted that the theatre will continue to serve as a prominent venue for esteemed establishments within the city. In a remarkable turn of events, the buildings have been swiftly repurposed as temporary cultural venues. In the month of September, art enthusiasts flocked to the renowned Parallel Vienna art fair, which showcased a diverse range of artistic expressions. This highly anticipated event not only attracted attendees from near and far, but also played host to esteemed guests such as the Vienna Festival Weeks and various captivating opera performances.

In addition, there are future endeavours in place to utilise the former kitchen on the premises for commercial purposes. Reports suggest that a new clubbing location is set to make its debut in the area. With ample room to accommodate approximately 500 guests, the kitchen holds immense potential as a versatile event space, according to sources. The Pavilion 15 has found a new purpose, regardless of the circumstances. In an exciting development, the Documentation Archive of the Austrian Resistance (DÖW) has announced its forthcoming relocation to a brand new location. Prior to occupancy, it is imperative that the technical infrastructure undergoes a thorough renewal process.

Exciting developments are on the horizon for food enthusiasts as plans for pop-up restaurants in the upcoming year have been unveiled. In a recent announcement, Schicker unveiled an innovative local supply concept. The local council is set to deliberate on the initial projects proposed for the Otto Wagner site before the year’s end.
