Netherlands: Without a tracker, ANWB no longer insures Urban Arrow freight bikes

You can no longer always contact the ANWB for insurance if you wish to cover an electric cargo bike under the Urban Arrow brand. Only models that are trackable by a tracker are still covered by insurance.

Urban Arrow cargo bikes are “very popular” with thieves, particularly in the Randstad, claims an ANWB spokeswoman.

The ANWB’s insurance provider, Unigarant, has confirmed that it would discontinue covering the well-liked electric cargo bikes without trackers in 2022. This occurred following a report from the consumer programme Radar.

The ANWB stated on Monday that it would temporarily discontinue covering fat motorcycles. Similar to the Urban Arrow, fat tyre electric bicycles have recently gained a lot of popularity with thieves as well as customers.

The ANWB claims that the real question is not if the fat bike would be stolen, but rather when. If the bicycles had been insured, the amount of damage recovered would have reached 800% of the premium.

Additionally, Univé has said that it would immediately discontinue insuring fat bikes. A spokesperson for the insurance claims that the danger is too high due to the many thefts. According to the spokesman, Univé will not be implementing an insurance freeze for Urban Arrow bicycles at this time.

According to Centraal Beheer, the insurance is aware of the many e-bike thefts. The business is looking into what steps should be taken to minimise the impact.

Bicycle owners need to take far more precautions to avoid having their electric bikes stolen, according to the police and the Dutch Association of Insurers. This can be achieved, for instance, by adding a tracker that allows a stolen bicycle to be located or by adding an additional lock on the bicycle.
