In collaboration with Changzhou City, a Hydrogen Innovation Center and Production Plant will be established.
Westport Fuel Systems Inc., a global leader in low-emission alternative fuel technologies, announced today plans to expand its global manufacturing footprint in China to support future growth of Westport’s hydrogen component business and other alternative fuel system technologies. Westport is targeting China for this manufacturing growth since the country is a global leader in hydrogen investment and infrastructure development. According to the investment agreement, the city of Changzhou will construct the new hydrogen research center and manufacturing facility in Changzhou Hydrogen Valley.
“For over 10 years, Westport’s hydrogen fuel system components under the GFI brand have had a significant presence in the Chinese market. “These components serve both hydrogen fuel cell and internal combustion engine applications,” stated David M. Johnson, CEO of Westport Fuel Systems. “Changzhou City is dedicated to becoming the capital of new energy industry. This makes them an excellent growth partner and provides the chance to build manufacturing excellence on a regional scale, which in turn helps our worldwide clients in driving the adoption of hydrogen as the primary low-emission transport solution.” We are thrilled to be collaborating with Westport to build a cutting-edge hydrogen research center and production plant,” stated Huan Heng, Deputy Mayor of Changzhou. “Changzhou Hydrogen Valley is a significant centre in the development of hydrogen-powered cars for China and the globe. We are delighted to welcome Westport, a global pioneer in hydrogen and alternative fuel solutions, as a partner and supporter of our expanding community of creative technology firms, and we look forward to our future growth together.”
Westport and Changzhou will design and develop a state-of-the-art hydrogen fuel systems manufacturing facility and office space exclusively for Westport’s advanced manufacturing needs, according to the conditions of the investment agreement. The Changzhou location will also house a contemporary innovation center that will continue to focus on hydrogen solutions in order to support Westport’s aim of developing unique, specialized, and market-ready emissions reduction solutions. Westport’s proposal to invest up to $10 million over the next decade will enable the development of proven hydrogen components to serve China’s rapidly increasing number of hydrogen-powered cars on the road.
Westport’s new plant, which is set to open in 2024, will supply crucial hydrogen components to the company’s present and increasing client base, including commercial vehicles, buses, high-speed rail, material handling, stationary power production, and more. Westport’s investment in Changzhou serves as a springboard for global developments in hydrogen technology.
