Emma Smetana, a Czech actress, musician, journalist, news presenter, and educated political scientist, was born in Prague on February 11, 1988.
Smetana holds dual citizenship in the Czech Republic and France. Her last name is "Smetanová" on Czech papers, and she goes by "Smetana" in French in honor of her father.
She moved to the Czech Republic in 2011, but when speaking with government officials, she continues to use the uninflected version of her last name, which she became accustomed to while living in France, Belgium, and Germany.
Early Life
She was born and raised in Prague until she was two years old, at which point she and her mother, Monika Pajerová, relocated to Paris to live with her father, Ji Smetana, the owner of the rock club "Gibus." She spent the first six years of her life in Paris before moving to Strasbourg for the next four.
Education
When she got back to Prague, she received her French Lyceum diploma. She entered the "Institut d'études politiques de Paris" (Sciences Po) after graduating, spending the first two years studying in the eastern French city of Dijon at one of the Sciences Po branches established in the summer of 2001 to look into the development in the post-communist states of Central and Eastern Europe, the Balkans, and the former Soviet Union.
Later, she went to Paris to do her master's degree in political science. At the Free University of Berlin, she earned her second master's degree in political science with a focus on European politics and international relations. It was rather energizing to have breastfeeding mothers and punks with two dogs attend my talks. She pursued her studies in political science and international relations at the Free University. She contributed brief cultural news pieces for the French left-wing newspaper Osvobozen while she was an undergraduate.
Early Career and TV NOVA case
In the TV Nova weather prediction column, she began her career in the Czech media. Later, she relocated to the newsroom, where she had enduring disputes with subordinates and coworkers. On May 31, 2016, the TV station eventually dismissed her.
Smetana filed a lawsuit against Nova for unpaid salaries for the time after her termination, and she also started to accuse her former employer in the media of unfair reporting, unlawful interference with journalistic activity, fraud against her personally, and other things.
Her accusations were deemed "false and misguided" by TV Nova, and after two years of legal fighting, her complaint was ultimately dismissed by the Supreme Court of the Czech Republic in September 2018.
Politics
She was a media assistant for then-Prime Minister Mirko Topolánek in the Office of the Government of the Czech Republic between 2008 and 2009. She relocated to the European Parliament's machinery in Brussels following the overthrow of the ODS administration and the installation of a bureaucratic cabinet, where she worked as a political intern for the Czech Social Democratic Party for many months and contributed to the internal party newspaper.
Musical Career
Since she was six years old, she has been studying the piano. She started a band in 2012 with the same name, in which she performs vocals, piano, and guitar. What I've Done, her debut studio album, was released in March 2016, and it features the song "No Fire" as its lead single.
She and her supporting ensemble performed in Czech railway stations under the stage name "Mezi vlaky" a year after the album's release. For instance, she successfully performed on May 19, 2017, at the Cheb train station, on June 2, 2017, at the Prague Main train Station, or on October 13, 2017, at the Olomouc railway station, all with the help of AD. In addition to Czech and French, Smetana also sings in English and Hebrew.
