The day was chosen in 2004.

International Dog Day
International Dog Day

The 21st of July is designated as World Dog Day. It was decided to honor four-legged animals on this day in 2004 because they have earned a place in their owners' families by their devotion and friendship.

This day's goal is to increase public awareness of the vast number of dogs left to their destiny or available for adoption in shelters.

70% of dogs worldwide, according to estimates from the World Health Organization (WHO), lack a home. Approximately 300 million dogs worldwide, of all varieties and sizes, are currently looking for a home to shelter them.

On this day, we must also keep in mind the functions that these domestic animals perform in society, including those of police, firemen, guide, rescue, and companion dogs.

Why is Dog Day observed on June 2 in Argentina?

On June 2, Argentina honors Chonino, a Federal Police canine that joined the police at the age of two and died in the line of duty on June 2, 1983, in a really heroic deed. Chonino is remembered on this day as the inspiration for National canine Day.

Chonino worked with the Federal Police's presa dog unit. In Devoto the evening of June 2, 1983, Chonino was taking part in a patrol when a gunfight with two criminals started. When the dog saw that his buddy was in danger, it leapt on one of them, who was then shot and died as a result.

But what is truly amazing is that a piece of the offender's coat that only had the DNI was discovered within Chonino's mouth, allowing the authorities to positively identify the two offenders.

Cora Cané, a writer, presented the idea for National Dog Day in 1996. Other national and international holidays dedicated to dogs include July 21 and August 26.

Other dog-related ephemerides

There are other days as well as July 21 to celebrate man's best friend, who is the subject of a more or less 30,000-year-old love contract. On August 26, several nations—including the United States, Mexico, Colombia, and Guatemala—celebrate Dog Day.

There are several days associated with ceremonies honoring our canine companions, including:

Day of the Dog Without Breed (May 28).
Take the Dog to the Office Day (June 21).
International Day of the Street Dog (last Sunday of July).
Adopted Dog Day (September 23).
Working Dog Day (December 6).
National Day of the Dog (June 2, in Argentina, in homage to Chunino, a German shepherd from the Federal Police who died in 1983 shot by a criminal).
