On his current tour, Scottish artist Paolo Nutini also made a stop in Vienna making it a night of surprises for Austrians.
To be sure, things have been rather quiet around Paolo Nutini since the publication of his third studio album in 2014. So the fans were overjoyed when he chose to release his new album in this nation as well. On Monday evening at the Vienna Gasometer, Nutini surprised a few people while not disappointed long-time supporters.
One thing is certain: everyone who has known Paolo Nutini for an extended period of time understands that he is continually reinventing himself. So, too, on this musical night.
In addition to his normal partner, the guitar, he was usually using the synthesizer this time. What looked weird at first was already apparent in his 2022 album "Last Night in the Bittersweet," which also served as the catalyst for the tour.
Nutini kicked up the show with a trippy vintage rhythm, which naturally heightened the anxiety in the audience. One had to wonder: will he actually stick with this new synth sound for the whole of the concert?
Yes, it was the solution! Although the Scottish singer incorporated the sound as a new element in his repertoire, he demonstrated with new ("Shine a Light") as well as well-known songs ("New Shoes") that he was still a classic singer-songwriter as well as an advocate of stadium-ready pop rock.
Nutini's vocal performance on the song "Through the Echoes" was the evening's high point. Many of his emotions and personality came to the fore in an unvarnished way, casting a spell on the crowd who sang along.
However, the mood peaked when Nutini re-enacted some of his previous hits. Strong choruses from the audience joined in on "New Shoes" and "Cherry Blossom," bringing cherished experiences with them. A musical evening finished with these complicated sentiments, sceneries, and noises, which may have begun oddly for some, but left them with the intended emotions.
